SPORTS RECAP: Week of October 3rd

Tennis: ROPSSAA Qualifying Tournaments

Mayfield’s Tennis team has been showing us all just what they are made of as they compete to qualify for ROPSSAA. The Juniors excelled with first place finishes coming from Alice Chen, Stefani Morton, and Will Wooton. Second place finishes came from Moses Brajkovich, Ally Carey and Cass Rasmussen. The Senior team also had an excellent showing at their ROPSSAA qualifying tournament. Our first place finishers were Maja Brajkovich and Ben Walter with Sharon Luo and Raegan Wong finishing in second place. Congratulations to all and Good Luck at ROPSSAA!!

Golf: ROPSSAA Championship
Date: Monday October 3rd
Location: Glencairn Golf Club

Our Mayfield Mavericks Golf Team played a great round at the ROPSSAA Championships on Monday at the challenging Glencairn Golf Club. The team was led by Cougar Collins with a score of 76 earning him 6th place individually, followed by Hayden Crouch with a score of 80, Tucker Hardy with a score of 104 and Garett Mercer with a score of 107. The team finished with a 5th place finish. The coaches are very impressed with the play of all four members of the team and congratulate them all as well. Congrats on a great season, boys!

Field Hockey:
Tuesday Games vs. Humberview and St. Michael
Thursday Games vs. Humberview and Turner Fenton
Dates: Tuesday October 4th and Thursday October 6th

The Mayfield Girls Field Hockey Team played four games this week. On Tuesday, the girls faced off against Humberview for their first game of the day. The girls lost 5-1 but grabbed a win in their second game against St. Michael. The girls were back in action on Thursday against Humberview and Turner Fenton. The girls lost to Humberview 2-1 but came back to capture a 3-1 against Turner Fenton. This week’s goals were scored by Edi Cadham, Renee Carriere and Ashley Gooderham. Brittany Giles showed her outstanding skill by controlling the mid-field while Erin Evans played outstanding on defense. Destiny Spencer made many timely saves throughout the week. The girls currently sit 3rd in the North Division, just three points behind 1st. The girls play their final two games of the season on October 19th against St. Joseph.

Junior Boys Volleyball: Game vs. St. Edmund Campion
Date: Tuesday October 4th
Location: St. Edmund Campion

Our Junior Boys Volleyball team hoped to grab their first win of the season on Tuesday in their game against St. Edmund Campion. The boys came out strong but fell just short losing both matches 26-24. The boys play two games this week facing Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Wednesday and North Park on Friday. The boys hope to see lots of Mayfield support when they play their home opener on Friday!

Senior Boys Volleyball: Game vs. St. Augustine
Date: Tuesday October 4th
Location: St. Augustine

The Mayfield Senior Boys Volleyball team has a strong showing against St. Augustine on Tuesday. The boys came out strong winning the first set 25-18 but St. Augustine came back to win the second set 25-23. The boys pulled it together and worked as a team to win the third set 15-11 to capture their second win of the season. The boys hope to extend their win streak to three game and take hold of first place in the North division with a win on Friday over North Park at Mayfield. The boys hope to see lots of fans in the stands on Friday!

Flag Football: Regular Season Game vs. Humberview and Tournament
Date: Wednesday October 5th
Location: Creditview/Sandalwood Sports Fields

Our Lady Mavs Flag Football team played a full day of games on Wednesday. Their day started with a regular season matchup against rival Humberview before hosting a full day tournament. The game against Humberview resulted in a 1-0 overtime loss for Mayfield. It was a hard fought game. The girls rebounded from their morning loss by going undefeated throughout the tournament leading to a finals matchup against Streetsville. The girls came out of the game with the silver medal. Quarterback Sisters, Maddie and Lizzie Gibson, put on a show all day making great plays and great throws. Skylar Litchfield made some excellent catches while Karissa Lilly and Muskaan Chandi were recognized by opposing team coaches as MVPs of games. The girls are back in action on Wednesday against Cardinal Leger for their first home game of the season.

Cross Country: Pre-ROPSSAA Meet
Date: Wednesday October 5th

Our Mayfield Cross Country team travelled to their Pre-ROPSSAA meet on Wednesday. This meet was attended by school all across Ontario. Our Midget Girls started off the day with a team finish of 15th overall. The team was led by Emma Everett who finished in an incredible 6th place in the race out of over 400 runners. Emmalyn Smith, Kristen Swatuk and Taylor Rasmussan all earned points for the team as well. The Midget Boys team was led by Musa Shah who finished in 58th while the Senior Girls were led by Leah Holtom. Our Senior Boys ranked to the top 20 teams overall. They were led by James Cromack who took 24th place in a race with over 500 athletes. James was followed by Max Grant, Cameron Dunkerly and Nicholas Klimciw who also secured points for the team. The Cross Country team competes at the ROPSSAA Championships on October 27th.

Junior Boys Football: Game vs. St. Thomas Aquinas
Date: Wednesday October 5th
Location: Mayfield


The Junior Boys Football team was back in action this week with a game against St. Thomas Aquinas. The boys came into their game hoping to capture their first win of the season, and the boys did just that. The team came out ready to play and took the game with a 22-6 win. Touchdowns were scored by Devin Marks and David Makwaira. Hitmen of the game were Eric Lynch and Ryan McIlhargey. The boys are now getting set to play on Friday October 14th against David Suzuki in Mayfield’s Friday Night Lights.

Senior Boys Football: Game vs. Fletcher’s Meadow
Date: Thursday October 6th
Location: Mayfield

Our Senior Boys Football Team played their second home game of the season on Thursday against Fletcher’s Meadow. The boys hoped to hand Fletcher’s Meadow their first loss of the season and extend their win streak to two games. The boys won the game 18-13 with touchdowns being scored by Dryden Lewis and Josh Mihkelson. Josh Bridge also had a fantastic by contributing one field goal, two converts and one rouge. Hitmen of the game were Jonathan Ferguson, Josh Mihkelson and Braden Vanstone. The boys are back in action on Friday against Castlebrooke as Mayfield host’s Friday Night Lights.

Senior Girls Basketball: Game vs. St. Michael
Date: Thursday October 6th
Location: St. Michael

The Senior Girls Basketball team was back in action on Thursday after playing the first two games of their tournament on Wednesday. The girls hoped to capture their second win of the season but came up just short as they lost 31-29. Key players in the game for Mayfield were Jotam Chouhan, Katya Dondi and Kristin Seymour. The girls are back in action on October 21st for their home opener against Cardinal Ambrozic.
